Who is Billy Nankouma Konate?

Billy Konate is an acclaimed African Master Drummer and the son of the legendary Master Drummer Famoudou Konate. He teaches and performs exclusively with Hooked On Drums in the Midwest. We brought him to Chicago in Spring and Summer of 2009 for fantastic workshops and performances with our youth students, and we’re happy to welcome him back again this year! Billy is the son of Master Drummer Famoudou Konate, from Guinea, West Africa. He was born into the Djembe/Dunun drum tradition of the Malinke people. He has learned from and performed with his father and the great masters in Africa from the age of 7. We’ve known Billy since he was 10, and have watched him grow into an incredible drummer and teacher—we named our youth ensemble after him! He currently performs and teaches in Germany, Guinea, Canada and now, in Chicago with Hooked On Drums.
